About MassCALL II: Addressing Opioid Overdose Through Collaboration And Community-Based Strategies

Steve Keel, Director of Prevention for the MDPH Bureau of Substance Abuse Services, describes the widespread and deadly impact of opioid abuse on the state in the period leading up to the 2006 application for MassCALL II funds, and the rigorous needs assessment and planning process that the 15 funded communities were required to go through before beginning to implement strategies. He explains how this initiative has led to positive outcomes, not only due to improved access to nasal Narcan (an overdose reversal drug) but also through an increased understanding of the nature of and stigma around addiction, especially among public safety officials, and a growing awareness of the importance of cross-municipality collaboration.
